A hide in the Sene Nature Reserve near VannesA favourite haunt of ours. Séné is located close to Vannes in the Golfe de Morbihan.

It is a very unassuming place with a small car park with a couple of picnic benches.

You enter a low building and pay the entrance fee (about 5 euros each I seem to remember) and you are given a pair of binoculars and a map.

The circuit links four hides and you walk on footpaths, on wooden bridges over the marshy areas and across stiles into fields full of sheep… be careful where you tread!

In each hide there is an expert bird watcher with very powerful monocular who finds the rarer species for us novices. Our children love spotting the different birds and ask to visit this nature reserve every summer.

Another great place to view wildlife is La Briere, between La Roche Bernard and La Baule in Loire-Atlantique. It’s the second largest marshland area in Europe after the Carmargue and less than an hour from Vannes. There’s plenty to do in the area – including visiting the salt marshes near Guerande and relaxing on the magnificent beach at La Baule.
