Getting to Missillac / La Roche-Bernard...
|
French Holiday Property LocationThe holiday cottage lies between La Roche-Bernard and Missillac, just a little way from the Brittany and Pays de la Loire borders, not far from the RN165 - this is the main arteriole road that links Brest, in the far North-West of Brittany, with Nantes. A journey to the cottage by car from the Western-Channel ports of Roscoff, St. Malo, Cherbourg or Caen will take between one-and-three-quarter hours (from St. Malo) and four hours (from Cherbourg). Most of this journey can now be done on dual-carriageway and motorway. We will provide specific directions to the cottage once your booking has been confirmed. By Conventional FerryThe region is very well serviced by Brittany Ferries, who operate regular sailings from Plymouth, Portsmouth and Poole in the UK into Roscoff, St Malo, Cherbourg and Caen in France. P&O offer crossings to Le Havre from Portsmouth, although due to the large distance from Le Havre (and all other ports to the East of Le Havre) to the cottage we have not included it in our table of travel distances below. Crossing times vary, starting at around 3 hours and 40 minutes on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg routes, and rising to more than 8 hours on the St Malo route. These crossings are frequent, available all-year round, and offer the most attractive prices. |

By Fast Ferry Over the past few years, crossing times on the Western Channel routes have been slashed by the introduction of a number of twin-hull fast ferries. Condor Ferries operates crossings from Poole and Weymouth into Cherbourg and St Malo that cut journey times considerably - and they are a good deal more comfortable than earlier catamarran options!
Brittany Ferries operate similar craft from Poole and Portsmouth into Caen, Cherbourg and St Malo. For example, the service from Poole to Cherbourg is now cut to 2 and a quarter hours by fast ferry. These crossings operate for a limited time during the year, and are generally more costly than conventional ferries - but they are quick!

By PlaneThe number of low cost carriers flying to the Brittany and Western Loire areas of France is changing all the time, and now provides those looking to take holidays in this region of France with a real alternative to the cross-channel ferries. At the time of writing this article it was possible to fly from Luton and Stanstead in the UK to Dinard (less than 2 hours from the cottage). In addition, there are flights from London Gatwick to Nantes Atlantique (less than 1 hour from the cottage), Southampton to Rennes (1 hour from the cottage), and Exeter to Brest (2 and a half hours). If you are prepared to travel a bit further, then there are flights from Stanstead into La Rochelle, Poitiers and Tours (all around 3 hours from the cottage). Look at the Flightchecker Website (click here) to search for low cost flights! One of the drawbacks of flying is that you will probably need to hire a car in France, adding to the cost of your holiday. Overall, though, there are significant time savings in taking the plane, making the possibility of a shorter break more attractive. Look here for details and prices of car hire locally! |
